The Bun Run 26

Riding Through Rain for Something Bigger

On Good Friday, we hosted our biggest Bun Run yet. Melbourne turned on the rain, the trails got wet, and still the Wondercross community showed up in force. More than 90 riders rolled out, with even more joining us afterwards for hot cross buns, coffee, and raffle prizes, all in support of the Inner North Community Foundation.

The Gravel Ride

The weather was properly wet, but that didn’t stop anyone. Riders rolled out from Wondercross in Northcote and headed onto a mixed terrain gravel route through the trails, paths, and backroads of Melbourne’s north.

It wasn’t a day for chasing perfect conditions. It was a day for showing up. For riding bikes together. For getting a little muddy. And for proving again that this community is built on much more than sunshine and smooth roads.

For us, that’s what made the day feel so special. Even with rain in the air and spray off the tyres, the energy stayed high from the first pedal stroke to the final return.

There’s something about riding in the rain that strips things back to what really matters. No one is there for perfect conditions. No one is there for fast times. You show up because you said you would, because your mates are going to be there, and because it feels like the right thing to do. That’s exactly what the Bun Run felt like this year.

From the moment riders began rolling in, dripping wet but smiling, it was clear this wasn’t going to be a typical Melbourne gravel ride. It was something more. A shared experience. A reminder of why we ride bikes in the first place. The trails through Melbourne’s north were slick, the corners a little looser than usual, and the pace naturally spread out. But that only added to it. Small groups formed, conversations flowed, and the ride became less about the route and more about the people around you.

More Than a Ride

The Bun Run is not just a bike ride. It’s a community fundraiser built to bring people together and direct that energy toward something meaningful. This year, the goal was to support the Inner North Community Foundation through raffle ticket sales and the generosity of the broader Wondercross community. Thanks to everyone who bought tickets, donated, volunteered, rode, or simply showed up, we reached our target.

There are plenty of cycling events in Melbourne, but the Bun Run is not about results, racing, or who got around the loop the fastest. It’s about community cycling. It’s about gravel riding in Melbourne. It’s about using the bike as a way to bring people together, support local causes, and create something that feels welcoming, useful, and real. If this year proved anything, it’s that the Wondercross community shows up. Even in the rain. Especially in the rain.

$1,784 for the Inner North Community Foundation

That number means a lot to us. It represents community in action. A bunch of people choosing to make time on a wet Friday morning, stepping out of their routines, and showing up for something that isn’t just about themselves.

It’s early alarms, wet kit, muddy tyres, and still deciding it’s worth it. It’s people backing a local cause, supporting each other, and being part of something that feels bigger than a single ride or event. More than anything, it’s a reflection of what this community is all about. People who care, who show up, and who are willing to put in a little extra to make something meaningful happen.

Hot Cross Buns, Coffee and Prizes

Riders rolled in steadily, which gave the whole morning a nice rhythm. Wet shoes at the door, bikes leaned up outside, hands wrapped around warm cups of coffee from Genovese. The smell of fresh hot cross buns filled the space, and before long it felt like the whole community had packed in together.

The raffle brought everything to life. A proper crowd gathered, tickets in hand, watching the wheel spin and cheering each other on. There’s something pretty special about that moment, when it stops being about what you might win and starts being about everyone sharing in it together.

That’s the thing with the Bun Run. On the surface, it’s a gravel ride in Melbourne. A loop through the north. A morning on the bike. But underneath that, it’s a reminder that bikes can bring people together in a way not much else can. Different backgrounds, different abilities, all showing up for the same reason.

To ride. To connect. To contribute.

A huge thank you to Genovese, who kept everyone buzzing with coffee throughout the event, and to Skin Grows Back, who supported the ride with custom-made Low Rider support bags worn by our ride sweepers out on course.

Our Amazing Sultanas

We could not have reached our goal without the help of our amazing Sultanas, our volunteer crew who helped make the whole morning happen. From setup and rider support to raffle ticket selling, guiding people through the event, and helping everything run smoothly in less-than-ideal weather, they were absolutely essential.

A massive thank you to:

Emma, Sarah. Jayne, Gus, Ray, Bron, Tim, Lee, Shaun, Min, Spanna, Malachi, Rachel, Jamie

Events like this only work because good people step up. We’re incredibly lucky to have a community that does exactly that.
