POC Amidal Launch Ride
At Wondercross, we’ve always believed the bike is just the excuse.
Sure, we love beautiful bikes, premium gear and the latest technology. But what really matters is the people who show up. The conversations before the ride. The nervous first-timers rolling out beside lifelong cyclists. The coffee afterwards. The shared experience of heading out into the trails together.
That’s exactly what made our recent POC Amidal Launch Ride such a special morning.
What started as an opportunity to showcase one of the newest helmets from POC quickly became another reminder of how strong and welcoming the Wondercross community has become over the years.
On a crisp Melbourne morning, riders gathered outside WXSHOP in Northcote ready to roll out on one of our favourite mixed-terrain loops. Gravel bikes lined the footpath, tyres buzzed across the concrete and the usual pre-ride chatter filled the air. Some riders were long-time Wondercross regulars, while others had joined us for the very first time after hearing about the ride through friends, social media or their local cycling circles.
That mix is something we’re incredibly proud of. From the beginning, Wondercross has been about creating a space where people feel comfortable turning up exactly as they are. Fast riders, slow riders, road riders, gravel riders, first-timers and experienced racers all rolling together. No pressure. No egos. Just good people exploring the outdoors by bike. The launch ride for the new POC Amidal helmet felt like a perfect extension of that philosophy.
Riding Together, Safely
Cycling technology has come a long way in recent years, especially when it comes to rider safety. While bikes often get most of the attention, helmets are arguably one of the most important pieces of equipment we use every single ride. POC has spent years building a reputation around rider protection, research and innovation, creating some of the safest helmets in the world for both road and off-road cycling. The new Amidal continues that direction with a strong focus on ventilation, comfort and protection for modern riders who spend long days mixing road, gravel and adventure riding together.
But for us, this event was never really about selling helmets. It was about creating an experience where people could connect with new technology naturally, out on the trails, surrounded by the kind of riding community that makes people excited to ride more often. That’s something we care deeply about at Wondercross. We want people to feel inspired every time they roll up to one of our rides. Whether it’s trying a new bike, testing fresh equipment, discovering a route they’ve never ridden before or simply meeting new people who share the same love for adventure.
The bike industry often spends a lot of time talking about products. We’re far more interested in talking about experiences.
MORE THAN JUST A SHOP RIDE
As the group rolled out from Northcote and onto the Yarra trails, the atmosphere was exactly what we hope every Wondercross ride becomes. Relaxed. Social. Inclusive. The route wound its way through gravel paths, river trails and hidden pockets of Melbourne that remind us how lucky we are to have access to these spaces right on our doorstep. Riders regrouped regularly, conversations changed every few kilometres and the bunch naturally split and reformed throughout the morning.
Some people came to try the new POC helmets. Some came because their friend invited them. Others simply wanted a reason to get out and ride. All of those reasons are valid. That’s the beauty of community rides. There’s no single definition of why people show up. But somehow, the shared experience of riding together creates connections that feel increasingly rare in modern life.
At Wondercross, we see that happen every single week. We’ve watched strangers become riding buddies. Customers become volunteers. Casual riders become deeply connected members of the cycling community. It’s one of the most rewarding parts of building this brand.
WHY COMMUNITY MATTERS
The cycling world can sometimes feel intimidating from the outside. Expensive gear. Fast groups. Unwritten rules. We’ve always tried to push against that. Wondercross exists because we believe cycling should feel approachable, welcoming and adventurous. You don’t need to race. You don’t need the most expensive setup. You don’t need to know anyone before arriving.
You just need to be curious enough to show up. That simple philosophy has helped shape everything we do, from our weekly gravel rides through to major events like The Bun Run, demo days, bikepacking overnighters and collaborations with brands we genuinely believe align with our values. The POC Amidal Launch Ride was another example of what can happen when brands support communities instead of simply marketing to them. And really, that’s where the magic is.
Looking Ahead
As Wondercross continues to grow, events like this remind us why we started in the first place. What began as a small weekly ride has evolved into something much bigger than we ever imagined. The community surrounding Wondercross continues to expand, bringing together people from all backgrounds through a shared love of riding, adventure and connection. We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who joined us for the launch ride and helped make the morning what it was.
A huge thanks as well to POC for supporting the event and continuing to push rider safety forward with products designed for modern cyclists. Most importantly, thank you to the people who continue showing up week after week. You are the reason Wondercross exists.
See you on the next ride.
